The Wiz
The Wiz is a musical re-imagining of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, with an all African-American cast. It premiered on Broadway in 1975. It was directed by Geoffrey Holder, and had a score by Charlie Smalls, and a libretto by William F. Brown. This production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical had many revivals including an upcoming revival in 2023, was made into a film in 1978 and had a TV musical special that aired on NBC in 2015. Between these adaptations, the play's frequent returns to the stage, and the continued popularity of such numbers as "Ease on Down the Road" and "Home", The Wiz appears to stand as one of the most well-known direct adaptations of original book.
Dorothy is a young girl who lives with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. She loved to play on their farm with her dog, Toto, instead of doing her chores. She would soon be swept away to the Land of Oz by a sudden Cyclone.
The Scarecrow meets Dorothy first comes across him while following the Yellow Brick Road. He calls to her and asks for money in order for him to buy himself a brain. She informs him that he wont be able to but he can join her to ask the Wiz for a brain.
The Tin Man in this production was similar to the one in the original text, as he was once a real man. A wicked witch put a spell on his axe which cut off his limbs. He did again and again until the woodsman was now the Tin man.
The Lion was always mocked and ridiculed for his cowardice until One day he encounters Dorothy and her new companions as the follow the yellow brick road through the forest. After a tussle they invite him on their quest to go see The Wizard.
Evillene the Wicked Witch is depicted as a loud tyrant with unappealing makeup, and is the second-most powerful witch after Glinda.
Addapearle a wisecracking showgirl Witch. Her magic isn't seen as the best or a little rusty.
She is depicted as a beautiful woman with appealing makeup and a luxurious pink dress. She is the most powerful witch. She arrives after being called upon by The Good Witch of the North Addapearle, She arrives in a large tent, with an escort of Quadlings.
He was once a salesman from Nebraska until he disappeared in a Hot Air Balloon in a storm and arrived in Oz, Many were amazed and proclaimed him The Wizard.
